One million oaks to Serra da Estrela!

With the fires every year, the highest mountain in Portugal, (Serra da Estrela, 2000 meters, in the middle of the country) keeps on losing great number of native trees.

Last year a project was born: “One million oaks to Serra da Estrela”. Fraternidade de Nuno Alvares (FNA) from Lisbon and Covilhã (nearest town to Serra da Estrela) adhered to this challenge of planting trees. So last year we picked up 1000 acorns and we did a parallel project with oaks growing in greenhouses.

Finally, last weekend, a group of fifteen adult scouts and guides planted 480 oaks and other trees on the mountain. It was an interesting and cheerful experience, and the mountain surely says: “Thank you, FNA.”

  2. Dear Rui Bernardo!

Thanks for your opinion. It is nice to have so passionate Scouts and Guides in Portugal. It is nice do everyday’s good deeds isn’t it?

I have great memories to your Summer Camp in Sao Jacinto in 2005. Did we meet there?

NOTE: I do not understand Portuguese, but I got text translated on Google Translate (http://www.google.com/translate). Here is translation:

“This was one of my moments at the service of all that fascinated me more! Being contributing to a cause, while enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Serra da Estrela, in the company of good friends and family.
    A large canhota for all.”

Regards to all my Portuguese friends.
